Saved in annual medical bills · 25%–36% lower hospital costs
A healthy mouth literally keeps you out of the hospital.
When researchers tracked over 11,700 adults for 5 years, patients who kept up with simple preventive dental visits had dramatically fewer emergency hospital admissions than those who skipped the dentist.
Published in the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry, Mayo Clinic researchers analyzed longitudinal records of 11,734 adults with chronic conditions (diabetes, coronary artery disease, or both). Consistent preventive dental care yielded net yearly medical savings of $515–$574 (diabetes), $548–$675 (coronary artery disease), and $866–$1,718 (both conditions), driven by a 25% to 36% reduction in inpatient hospital costs.
